Crafting Heritage: The Making of a Bespoke Historic Oak Front Door

At Eleet Woodworks, we believe that preserving history requires a seamless blend of traditional craftsmanship and uncompromising quality. Recently, we were entrusted with a sensitive and rewarding project: the complete replacement of a worn-out front door on a cherished historic building.

Preserving Character and Heritage.

When working on historic properties, maintaining the authentic aesthetic and architectural integrity of the building is paramount. After a thorough consultation with the property owner, it was decided that a total replacement—encompassing both the door and its structural frame—was necessary to ensure long-term durability while honouring the building's legacy.

To prevent unsightly aesthetic damage, all original hardware was replaced with premium new ironmongery, thoughtfully selected to complement the historic style without risking chemical staining on the fresh oak.

Sourced for Strength: Premium Seasoned Oak.

The foundation of any exceptional wooden door is the timber itself. For this build, we sourced top-grade seasoned oak.

A Note on Timber Quality: Natural timber often presents "shakes"—surface cracks or separations that naturally run along the grain and growth rings. However, the quality of the oak we sourced for this project was exceptionally high, boasting minimal natural flaws, superb grain consistency, and very little waste.

From Raw Timber to Finished Masterpiece.

Every Eleet Woodworks creation goes through a meticulous, multi-step journey from raw material to a stunning architectural centerpiece. Our unwavering commitment to attention to detail guides every phase of production:

  • Careful Sourcing: Hand-selecting durable, high-grade seasoned oak tailored to structural and aesthetic demands.
  • Precision Machining & Shaping: Crafting the components to match historic profiles while ensuring modern weather-proofing and structural security.
  • Expert Assembly: Meticulously dry-fitting and joining the frame and door to guarantee a flawless alignment.
  • Finishing Touches: Applying protective, high-performance finishes and installing complementary hardware to safeguard the wood for decades to come.
